“Be yourself and embrace the adventure!” - Meet Sonya, our Grant Writer and Project Lead

When not working, Sonya enjoys creating big batch menus for herself and others, going for walks on the Green Necklace or Spirit trail, swimming laps, and saunas with her husband, Paul. She loves trees and mountains, movie soundtracks, and new recipes.

Raised in a small, tight-knit community in Montana, USA, her cherished childhood memories include getting firewood with her dad and siblings and singing rounds on road trips with her mom. She is driven by strong values like integrity, empathy, and excellence and fears playing it too safe and missing what’s possible.

Sonya’s role at Kaci is Project Lead and Grant Writing Specialist, and she likes that Kaci is “agile, team-oriented, and passionate about helping organizations reach their potential.”

The most inspiring part of her job is “helping people that help people.”

Sonya received her Bachelors in Washington, her Masters at Trinity Western, and her Ph.D. (cand.) at the University of Alberta. She has lived in Montana, Washington, BC, Alberta, and Japan.

Sonya has extensive experience peer-reviewing academic journals in her research field as an editor, publishing several articles in academic journals and anthologies as a writer, and teaching English as a second language in Vancouver and Japan.

She has also been the Assistant Director of Academic Studies in an ESL company in Vancouver and a Service Coordinator responsible for managing client relationships in a local computer company.

Sonya brings a fresh perspective to Kaci from her experience working in various business sectors. Her biggest career-related accomplishment is having her research published and used in the study of other scholars. For anyone interested in joining the Kaci team of superstars, Sonya says, “Be yourself and embrace the adventure!”

If Sonya won the lottery tomorrow, she’d start a food company where people can gift private-chef-created meals to people going through rough times. If she could invent a holiday, it would involve enjoying the surroundings in complete quiet - “a day without cars, machines, or artificial audio so that people could celebrate the natural world.” She said.

If she weren’t so darned good at her job, she would probably be writing a book; her favorite phrase in the English language is “no worries,” and the best pieces of advice she’s received are “We’re allowed to get smarter,” and “Whether you think you can, or you think you can't – you're right.”
